A majestic waterfall wrapped in legend and natural beauty
Ravana Falls is one of Sri Lanka’s most spectacular waterfalls, located just 6 km from Ella town on the Ella–Wellawaya road. Cascading from a height of nearly 25 meters (82 ft), it forms natural pools that are perfect for cooling off on a warm day.
The waterfall is named after the legendary King Ravana, a key figure in the ancient Indian epic, the Ramayana. According to legend, Ravana hid Princess Sita in a nearby cave (known today as Ravana Cave), which adds a mythical charm to the area.
According to the Ramayana, Ravana — the powerful King of Lanka — kidnapped Princess Sita and kept her hidden near these waterfalls in the Ravana Cave. It’s said that the falls were used by Sita to bathe during her captivity, giving this spot a deep spiritual and historical connection for both Buddhists and Hindus.
